This is the B’s Stonehouse, our Baileys Harbor home with 140 feet of Lake Michigan Shore. Here no two sunrises – like snowflakes – are ever the same. You can enjoy the beautiful lake views from all over the inside of the house. Outside, you can truly experience the lake up close and personal by relaxing on the brand new dock, swimming, or participating in your preferred water sport. The dock features 2 ladders for easy swimming access as well as two built in racks to hold kayaks or paddle boards. You can either bring your own or rent them (by the hour, day, or week) just across the street at Lakeshore Adventures.
This large stately home was built in 1939 and sits right in the heart of Baileys Harbor. Baileys Harbor, in turn, sits right in the heart of Door County with fast and easy access to anywhere on the Door Peninsula. While the backyard and lakeshore are quiet and peaceful, there may be a busy ride right outside the front door. Just across the street are The Cornerstone Pub, The Bearded Heart Coffee Shop, Door County Brewery and Music Hall, and Lakeshore Adventures. You can walk to your choice of dining experience from ice cream or pizza to fine dining. Two parks with play equipment, as well as a sandy beach at Ridges County Park are easily walkable with the little ones. Two blocks away, The Ridges Sanctuary, a fine nature preserve that has become a world class destination, offers accessible boardwalks throughout and an interpretive learning center with a stocked gift and book shop. The town library and park are just a short walk as well. Every weekend is a farmers market, which includes beautiful arts and crafts, fresh vegetables, and gigantic bouquets of fresh flowers.
Our backyard, in contrast to the front, is very private and just as quiet as you want it to be. The back is one story lower than the front, down very old limestone steps. It is like stepping back in time to a quieter era. The huge fire pit with tons of comfy seating, anchors the yard, situated lakeside and dockside. Almost every night is a perfect night for stargazing. There is a screen porch that you access from outside that has a comfy sofa and two tables with eight chairs.
Inside the house, your biggest dilemma may be where to sit in order to best enjoy the lake views. The second floor three season screen porch benefits from its elevated position (and comfy furniture!) There is a large sliding glass door off the first floor family room that opens onto a small deck. This connects to the sunroom (aka breakfast room) just off the kitchen for year-round viewing enjoyment. It is nice that you can always find your own niche here
The living and dining rooms are large and comfortably furnished. The kitchen, while newly renovated with an island and farmhouse sink, retains much of its original charm in the form of the original white wooden curboard. There is a brand new gas range that the gourmet cooks will appreciate as well as a new gas grill on the back patio.
The four large bedrooms are each named to describe the décor. The mattresses, bedding, pillows, etc. are all new. Almost all of the beds have duvet covers with down inserts. You will be comfortable here. And for peace of mind we have just installed child safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
Our latest project here has been to refurbish one of the basement rooms (which has a nice view of Lake Michigan) into a rec room. There is a new regulation ping pong table, a checkers table, a bar, a huge comfy couch, and big set of Lincoln Logs! And it is always wonderfully cool down in that level, although the rest of the house stays comfortable with the wonderful lake breezes as well as seven ceiling fans.
This house offers you plenty of choices of dining spaces. You can seat nine in the dining room, six in the sunroom, and eight plus on the new patio with its new patio table as well as the teak benches. Finally, don’t forget the screen porch that seats eight! There are plenty of dishes, silverware, glasses, wine glasses, etc. for all.
The mudroom is a convenient place to do all your laundry, plus stow away you gear or extra food/drink items. It has a small refrigerator that we use to keep beverages conveniently at hand.
If you think this place sounds fun for the summertime, it is every bit as beautiful during every other season of the year. It would be a great place to celebrate a country Thanksgiving or Christmas with charming seasonal celebrations.
